Our Powerful God

Psalm 29:1-11

“Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!”

Our Powerful God

This Psalm demonstrates exactly how powerful our Lord is. His power is so great that His voice causes things to happen. Isn’t it humbling to think of the power our God has? With just His voice He can crush, terrify, and shake anything He pleases.

His power appears so much greater when compared to our own. We often can’t manage to make things happen even when we put everything we have into the effort. But God – His power is so great that He merely speaks and it is done.

With power like this, He certainly deserves to be called glorious and powerful. Not one of us should hope to be against this God. If just His voice is capable of these things, imagine His hands! Anything standing against the Lord cannot stand for long.

At the end of this Psalm, there is good news. It says, “May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!”

It is true that for anyone against the Lord, His strength and glory is bad news. But it is also true that for His people, His strength is for good. The strength of the Lord is offered to us – you and I who are found in His grace. He blesses us with peace. The terror and shaking and crushing is relented and we receive His benefits.

What a good God this is! Because of His grace, His power and glory are now for your good. Praise be to God!

Dear God, thank you that your power is for my good. Remind me of your words of forgiveness and mercy over me. Keep me within your goodness. Amen
